Interacting with the Drug Abuser during the Intervention
![]()
Most importantly, a trained mediator or addiction-medicine professional is there to ensure that everyone’s rights and feelings are protected. From planning to inception and execution, a trained interventionist is key to the success of the intervention. Without a professional present, interventions can and do turn into witch-trial roastings of the substance abuser. Needless to say, this causes more harm than good to the alcoholic and addict. Poorly-planned or non-mediated interventions frequently turn into shouting matches that leave the family feeling guilty and push the addict further into her disease.
