Drug Detox Programs

More than a kick off to the rehabilitation process, drug detox is the initial step to rehabilitation and is often referred to as withdrawal. On this process, drug abusers are kept away from all drugs, often on a drug abuse treatment center where they are housed and well taken cared of. Drug detox is intended to flush residues of drugs and alcohol out of the body.
There are many drug detox programs to choose from, depending on the history and severity of addiction. Others may have to be admitted in treatment houses while others need not stay in-house. Still others may need rapid detox treatment. Each program has its advantages and drawbacks.
In some instances, drug addicts may be given drugs as a substitute to the drugs they are already taking. This is in an effort to relieve them from the symptoms of withdrawal which are expected to arise while on the drug detox center. This is called the substitute drug method of detoxification. However, this is not a good choice for someone with prescription drug addiction, as this an only worsen their addiction.
Rapid detox is referred to as the fastest route to drug rehabilitation. On this process, the patient with severe drug addiction problems are put under general anesthesia is injected with a strong drug to pump drugs out of their system. While this may sound easy and fast, recovery and physical stress on the body due to rapid detox may linger for days. Such that the person is likely to continually exhibit side effects and withdrawal symptoms of drug detox.
Considered as the best detoxification method is what is known as gradual withdrawal technique. On this program, patients are admitted into medically supervised substance abuse treatment centers complete with all treatment facility to help them get through in their withdrawal from drugs. Certain drugs are used to help alleviate the symptoms of withdrawal; but unlike in substitute drug method, withdrawal drugs are given only at a certain short period of time, and patients need not take such drugs anymore the moment they leave the addiction treatment centers.
