Progress Against Drug Addiction: Slow and Steady Does it
![]()
Though it’s easier said than done, no one expects you to jump into drug treatment and get well overnight. This is a long process that takes time, energy and courage. You will experience things that make you uncomfortable and actually may make you want to drink or use more than before you began treatment. Your perceived feeling of backpedaling is just caused by separation anxiety, as from a friend who’s presence you’ve gotten used to. It’s crazy to imagine, but we all become used to our low-quality or depressed lives as alcoholics and drug addicts.
When we start drug and alcohol addiction treatment and recovery we may feel uncomfortable because we’re trying to make our lives better; the “growing pains” we experience during this process often make us want to drink or use just to relieve the pain or uncertainty of our challenging journey. Don’t fear! You can and will get through this period the same way millions have before you and millions will after. People who know will never lie to you by telling you that rehab and recovery are easy. But, they sure are better than the alternative of living out the rest of your days with a worsening and debilitating condition. And, of course, treatment and recovery are better options than hurting your loved ones, ruining your dreams and dying an untimely death.
