Confidence Is Key in Addiction Treatment

Confidence Is Key in Addiction Treatment

You’re making the right decision. This long and rewarding journey repairs the mental damage done from substance abuse, improves the quality of your personal relationships, and unties you from the bonds of craving, shame and regret you’ve felt ever since you first recognized your problem. It all starts with admitting and accepting that you have a problem, which is often the most difficult part. That is why this is the first step in every 12-step program of recovery, and most other treatment and recovery programs as well.

Admitting your problem is tough because it means saying that something is beyond your control. For many who’ve felt in control of everything most their lives, this loss of control is almost impossible to admit. It’s important to remember that admitting you aren’t in control doesn’t mean personal failure. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad or evil person. The loss of control in your alcohol and drug use only means that you have a treatable disease. A diabetic can’t control their blood sugar, but they should not be ashamed of that. Diabetics accept their treatment plan and do their best to get better. Alcoholics and drug addicts also have a problem they can’t control. To get better, they must find an addiction treatment plan that works for them and stick to it. Simple.
