Addiction is properly viewed by the medical and mental-health community as a chronic and debilitating disease, with the same type of onset, progression and recovery. Like any chronic disease, the symptoms will only get worse over time if ignored. Many possible drug addicts view their unhealthy actions as weaknesses rathern than symptoms, thinking of their slow, steady loss of control as just a need for more self-control.
