Addiction Is NOT a Choice

Addiction Is NOT a Choice

It cannot be stressed enough that people showing signs of addiction are not bad, evil, or weak. Instead, these people are simply suffering from an untreated disease; they are sick people. Addiction is not a moral or character flaw. No one “chooses” to be an alcoholic or a drug addict. The memorable public service announcement of early ‘90s is entirely true: “No one ever says, ‘I want to be a junky when I grow up.’” To think that someone wakes up in the morning and actively chooses to slowly die a painful, tragic death is ridiculous! After all, no one “chooses” diabetes or cancer; and yet, these are diseases too.
