What’s Your Diagnosis?

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

A dual diagnosis is when an individual suffers from a substance abuse problem as well as an emotional condition. The diagnosis is more common than you would think and is a lifelong struggle. For some a dual disorder can be an alcohol problem accompanied with borderline personality disorder. For others, it can be an eating disorder with a cocaine problem—either way, people should seek the treatment necessary to live a functional life. This may be a hard diagnosis to receive, but there are dual diagnosis clinics that can help through this difficult time. Finding a dual diagnosis facility that the patient feels comfortable in and has an organized plan—that may also included treatment for cocaine addiction, is crucial in recovery.
But it is important to receive treatment for both conditions in order to have the best chance of recovery. While seeking the right treatment, patients will be re-taught important coping and life skills. These skills are extremely important for individuals to continue to live functionally.

Beat Binge Eating Disorder

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

There are three different eating disorders: binge eating, bulimia and anorexia. An individual who binge eats will consume a usually large amount of food. These people usually suffer from anxiety or depression and eat food as a means of comfort. If you or a loved one suffers from a disorder similarly, there are depression centers that can help. People with binge eating disorder make up the largest percentage of individuals with an eating disorder in the country. They will be able to help you find the correct means of treatment. When someone suffers from bulimia they binge eat and the purge (by either vomiting or using laxatives). People who suffer from bulimia usually are average size and appear to have “normal” eating habits. When a person suffers from anorexia, they starve their bodies of nutrients and calories in order to loose weight or keep it off. It’s fascinating to take note that under these three larger categories, there is a list of eating disorders that are variations of each type. Doctors and other respected scholars who work with eating disorders often ask why these other disorders are not considered as severe as the three main eating disorder types.
Many binge eaters feel that they can never conquer their disorder. But if taught the right coping skills and tackling emotional disorders patients will hopefully learn they too don’t have to eat for comfort. Luckily, there are studies being conducted to try to help binge eaters regain control of their lives. There is a recent study done about a self-help program using cognitive behavior training to help binge eaters overcome their disorder. The results are looking positive, with any luck the self-help groups will keep helping people to not binge eat!

Address Your Dual Disorder

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

If your or a loved on just received a dual disorder diagnosis, times may seem bleak, but with hard work you can overcome your adversity. A dual disorder is when an individual suffers from an emotional condition as well as a substance abuse problem. When this is the case, it’s smart for patients to check themselves into a dual diagnosis rehabilitation center. That way they can go through a supervised detox period, where they will cleanse their body of the substance they were abusing. There are other potential combination of emotional conditions and other disorders that affect people with this diagnosis, such as, individuals suffering from an emotional condition as well as an eating disorder, too. The treatment of a dual disorder is very important to an individual’s recovery because both conditions need to be addressed simultaneously to have the best results. Patients should find a dual diagnosis treatment center that will meet all their needs and help them through this difficult time. It is crucial for patients to trust the doctors working on their case, too. By changing doctors or programs mid recovery can be detrimental to the recovery period because it can case unnecessary stress on the patient. This may cause the patient to relapse and fall back into bad habits. These treatment centers will also teach patients important life and coping skills to help them stay strong in stressful times.
If your loved one has this diagnosis, don’t worry; with the right care they too will be able to live a functional healthy life. It is important to be supportive, but be sure not to coddle the patient during this time. One of the best ways to help would be to find information about the different treatment programs available for your loved one to receive the best treatment possible.

Drug Addiction Center Information

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

A person who is suffering from substance abuse often cannot see the problems their abuse is causing. They are often in a state of denial, or they may in fact be able to carry on the semblance of a normal life. Even if that is the case, the substance abuser is always living and operating at a level below normal. In addition, those who surround the substance abuser are also negatively affected. Their normal lives are often interrupted by worry and fear regarding the health and safety of the person they suspect is a substance abuser. If a person who is suffering from substance abuse finally sees the situation for what it is and decides they want to make a change in their life, a drug addiction center is a place they can turn to for help.

A drug addiction center is a facility that is exclusively dedicated to the rehabilitation of those who have been substance abusers and who now want to rid themselves of the debilitating yoke of abuse. Such a facility is fully equipped to handle the many and varied problems that accompany substance abuse. These facilities are distinguished by their singular purpose, their professionally trained staff, and their adherence to treatment methods that are proven to be effective in ending the cycle of substance use and abuse.

At a drug addiction center, the person seeking recovery from substance abuse can expect to find a supportive and nurturing environment that is wholly directed towards helping them recover from their substance abuse. The person seeking recovery can also expect that treatment providers will be up to date on all the latest research in the field of substance abuse, and that the facility will be furnished with and have access to the different kinds of technology that aid in substance abuse recovery.

A drug addiction center can play a key role in restoring a substance abuser to a meaningful role in their family, social group, work place, and even in society at large. Those who spend time at a drug addiction center often leave treatment with a new lease on life, having been freed from the problems of substance abuse.

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Substance use, abuse, and addiction are fast becoming commonplace problems faced in modern life. While more widespread and even socially acceptable, casual use can and often does lead to an addiction that seriously impedes an individual’s ability to lead a normal, productive life. When addiction becomes a debilitating condition, help should be sought immediately. There are many different treatment options available today. In CA, the choices of treatment are many and varied. Rehabilitation programs, sometimes called rehab, are an excellent option for treatment. Participating in California drug rehab can greatly improve an addict’s life.

Stopping substance abuse can take many different forms. California drug rehab is notable for its many different iterations. There are many different paths one can choose when seeking recovery, and programs in CA open many of those paths to those who are seeking to overcome an addiction. If a person in the grip of substance addiction chooses to get help, CA is a good place to look.

California drug rehab can be challenging, but the effort an individual puts into their recovery is well worth it in the long run. Because addiction changes every aspect of a person’s life, it is important to find the program that best addresses an individual’s needs and proclivities. The challenge often comes in admitting how far reaching an addiction has become. Once an individual is ready to face the fact that their life has become defined by their abuse, the true healing and recovery process can begin in earnest.

California drug rehab programs are well equipped to address the many consequences that addiction can cause. For example, there are many programs that help individuals repair relationships that have been damaged by the side effects of abuse. California drug rehab programs can also help individuals return to the work place, if their use has resulted in their termination from employment. Whatever the needs of the individual are, there is a program available to meet those needs. Careful research into the available treatments methods will yield a program that can help an individual along the road to recovery.

Marijuana: Recognizing Abuse

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Of all the illicit drugs available today, perhaps the most prevalent is marijuana. Its use is common in many different circles, and it is used in many different ways. There has recently been a push to decriminalize the use of this drug in the United States, but it is still illegal to possess or use in a majority of states. It is, however, acceptable to use as a medication in several states. This serves to blur the line between legal and illegal use even further.

Marijuana can be ingested in a number of ways. The most common way of taking it is by smoking it. Pipes, water pipes, rolling papers, and other instruments are easy ways of delivering the drug to users. For those who are sensitive to smoke, it is also possible to prepare the drug in such a way that it can be eaten and give the user the same effects as if it were smoked. Preparing the drug to be eaten is more time consuming, and does require specialized knowledge. If done properly, however, eating it can be just as effective as smoking it, in terms of the effects it has on the user.

Most people who use marijuana experience increased relaxation and increased appetite. This can be beneficial for those who are suffering from painful or wasting disorders, such as glaucoma or HIV positive status. This is usually the justification given for using the drug as any other prescription drug would be used. For others, however, there are also the possible side effects of loss of motivation and loss of motor control. Detractors of the substance point to these problems when arguing against the decriminalization of what they consider to be a dangerous drug. It is also often argued that use of any drug, no matter how apparently benign, will encourage the use of other more dangerous substances.

When used to excess, marijuana can certainly become addictive, and may negatively influence the course of a person’s life. It is therefore always important to consider why and to what extent a person is using marijuana, so they and not the drug can remain in control.

Overcoming Steroid Addiction

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The idea of being a winner is in itself addictive. Certain kinds of people with certain kinds of personalities are willing to do anything to get to the top. When it comes to sports or other physical contests, the urge to get an advantage will be more than those kinds of people can resist. Drug use and eventually steroid addiction are often the outcome of this kind of competitive personality.

Although there haven’t historically been many reported cases of steroid addiction, steroid use has become far more prevalent today, causing the potential for addiction to rise dramatically. The kind of person who would be attracted to using steroids is particularly susceptible to drug abuse. A person who is willing to do anything to be the best is not likely to consider the potential dangers of drug abuse. More troubling still, that kind of person may in fact understand the potential dangers of drug abuse, but may nonetheless be willing to risk those dangers.

Steroid addiction, while a relatively new phenomenon, doesn’t have to be an impossible problem to overcome. There is help available. The first step is to recognize that there is a problem. This type of addiction can be hard to recognize, as people who are susceptible to it do not fit the typical profile of a drug addict. People at risk of this particular kind of addiction are often healthy, driven individuals. Some signs to consider are increased focus on physical activities, a loss of interest in other pursuits, changes in appetite or diet, and unpredictable mood swings.

If you suspect someone you know may be struggling with steroid addiction, it is important to take action as quickly as possible. Given the personality type of the person likely to suffer from steroid addiction, however, it is equally important to approach the topic in a non-confrontational way. It may be helpful to begin with your observations of the physical changes that have occurred, or to bring up the topic through references to high-profile cases of steroid abuse. If the person you are trying to help realizes you are not attacking them but rather their problem, they will likely be more amenable to treatment.

Marijuana Detox and Staying Sober

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Marijuana detox is a necessary beginning for overcoming marijuana dependency. Overcoming any drug or alcohol dependency can be a long and sometimes even painful experience, but, with the proper guidance and support, it can be done, and done successfully. The first step towards ridding oneself of addiction is usually detoxification. This is the process by which the body rids itself of any traces of the substance that was being abused. Detoxification can go through many different stages and can be either a short or a long process, but it is always a necessary step on the road to recovery.

When going through the process of marijuana detox, the former user should realistically expect a difficult transition from dependence on marijuana to freedom from marijuana. While it can be difficult, it is important to remember that it can be done. Many, many people have won their battle against marijuana addiction, and they all have had to experience the unpleasantness of the detox process. Knowing that others have succeeded can provide important support to those starting the process.

Marijuana detox is often more successful when it is done in a controlled and supportive environment with the encouragement of knowledgeable and experienced counselors. Being surrounded by people who understand the difficulty of the experience can add a level of perseverance and determination that may not have been possible if the person attempting to detox was doing it alone. Likewise, being in an environment that is conducive to detoxification can make the process more comfortable. Most importantly, constant positive enforcement throughout this difficult period will greatly increase the chances of lasting freedom from marijuana addiction.

While marijuana detox is an important first step, it is not the end of the road to recovery. In order to move past the starting stage of marijuana detox and into a permanently changed lifestyle, the former addict will need to continue their journey with the support and in the environment that made detox possible in the first place. After acquiring the tools of self-confidence and motivation through the detox process, the person who gets through detox can be inspired to continue their recovery.
